Caroline Maben Flower, the only woman in the mining game during the Porcupine Gold Rush, painted in pink.
Born on a farm in the American Midwest, Caroline took to the piano as a girl and, with her family's support, travelled to Berlin for further musical training.
She left an unhappy first marriage to a Mr. Maben. Divorce was rare enough at the time that it was reported in the newspaper. She later married her second husband, Mr. Flower.
In New York she taught piano. Programs held in the Carnegie Hall archives record annual recitals of her students in the Chamber Music Hall, first under the name Caroline Maben and, by 1905, Caroline Maben Flower. She also composed and arranged music.
Cobalt's silver boom filled the papers. Advised by her doctor to rest in the countryside, she came to the frontier mining town of Cobalt, Ontario instead, took up prospecting, and promoted herself in the trade as the one woman in the game.
She followed the rush north to the Porcupine gold fields, on Treaty 9 territory, the traditional lands of the Ojibway, Oji-Cree, Mushkegowuk (Cree) and Algonquin peoples. Local newspapers called her the "Lady Prospector." She was in the camp when the Great Porcupine Fire swept through in July 1911.
The Porcupine Advance reported that Mrs. Flower of New York had returned to her home on the Mattagami River and set a crew of men to work developing her properties in Turnbull Township.
Among the compositions kept by her family is a piece titled Mattagami River, written by the Lady Prospector herself.
My working life has brought me into the mining industry, here in the same ground Caroline walked over a century ago. When I came across her photograph from 1911, a woman in a wide hat with a prospector's bag across her shoulder, standing in a camp of men, I knew she belonged on a canvas, and that she belonged to this place.
I painted her in monochrome pink and surrounded her with flowers, for her name, Flower, and to give her back some of the softness she had to set aside to survive in a man's world. Pink for October, for breast cancer awareness. Pink for every woman in history whose name nearly disappeared.
We belong here too.

Drag across the rock. Someone sprayed graffiti on the boulder in front of Hard Rock Animal Hospital, so the vet asked me to paint over it. An owl, a raccoon, a fox and a wolf moved in instead. They wrote bullsh!t, so I painted the bull's skull.
